A girl in a white dress, a marquee, a string quartet, DJ and photo booth – a delightful scene that’s we wedding caterers see recreated across the country throughout the ‘season’.

Last week it was the turn of hotel heiress Nicky Hilton and banking heir James Rothschild, who tied the knot at Kensington Palace.  And one or two lavish, impressive and expensive details aside it was, in essence, a very traditional English wedding!

Putting aside the Valentino dress that was rumoured to have cost a staggering £50,000 and a guest list that included royalty, high society and celebrities, last week’s nuptials were reassuringly familiar to the likes of us wedding caterers.

After a late afternoon ceremony, it was drinks followed by canapés and dinner. Dessert was served from a pudding bar, with late night nibbles on offer from half past midnight until 1.30am.

A WIN-WIN FOR EVERYONE!

From a wedding caterers’ perspective the menu format was a win-win for all concerned.  Not only did the wedding menu reflect the happy couple’s British/American heritage and personalities (sliders and lemon sponge), it also successfully combined classic quality flavours and seasonal ingredients (fillet of beef, asparagus and summer vegetables) with choice and fun (13 luscious pudding options).

There’s no doubt this was an upmarket affair with no expense spared, but as far as the food goes it was a menu that could easily be tailored to meet the needs of couples on a, let’s say, less lavish budget!

Although Nicky and James did serve canapés and a starter they cleverly limited main course choices to either a meat or vegetarian option.  But when it came to dessert guests were spoiled for choice, with options including cheesecake, trifle, fruit salad and chocolate bavarois.  And while the desserts were certainly extremely posh sounding interpretations of classic puddings, they were, none the less, guaranteed to be classic crowd pleasers!

So if you’re planning a wedding, ahead of your meeting with your wedding caterers consider your approach.  First and foremost, our advice is to focus on quality.  Regardless of whether you’re dreaming of a formal affair or fancy a more informal get together, remember – it’s a special day deserving of a special wedding day feast.
