It’s official – women would rather have cake than sex! So with TV cookery shows sometimes described as food porn, let’s consider what it is about coffee & cake that turns us all on!
Millions of us have spent the last few weeks glued to the action in the Great British Bake Off tent – a show that’s had us rushing out to stock up on baking essentials in order to create our very own showstopper cakes.

The recession heralded the start of an era of thriftiness, when home-made, re-used and upcycled surged into fashion once again. We dug out our preserving pans, sewing machines and garden forks to make do and mend. And what’s more fulfilling than a home-baked pie or cake?

So, as eating out became out of the question for many, coffee & cake provided an affordable indulgence.

Just look around! Our high streets are rammed with outlets selling coffee and cake. From department stores to bakery chains, they’ve all jumped onto the coffee & cake bandwagon. Not to mention of course the large coffee shop chains who seem hell bent on colonising the land (with their long life delights).
John Lewis announced free coffee & cake to loyalty card holders, while free coffee at Waitrose has created quite a stir, catapulting it into the UK’s second largest coffee outlet, behind McDonald’s (see link below).
Thankfully for the discerning coffee & cake consumer the independent cafes certainly know how to hit the spot with their home baked offerings and quality coffee.

Here at Expresso, we’re proud to be one of the city’s longest established independent coffee shops, open seven days a week for locally roasted coffee and home-made food. And we’re very proud of the provenance of our cakes. We bake all our own cakes, on the premises, using fresh quality ingredients including free range Norfolk eggs. We’re always baking!

In the survey mentioned above – launched to coincide with National Cake Week – it was not only sex that cake lovers said they were willing to forgo in favour of a slice of heaven! Nine per cent of those questioned said they would give up their car or internet (forever) for a sweet treat, while almost a quarter would rather have cake than a glass of wine. A staggering 13% would even ditch their mobile phones!

According to poll carried out by the makers of Mr Kipling, the UK’s top ten cakes are:
Chocolate, victoria sponge, lemon drizzle, carrot, cherry bakewell, coffee, Christmas cake, Battenberg, angel slices and Madeira. Interestingly, in Norwich, carrot cake came in at number two!
As well as a wide selection of top favourites, visitors to Expresso can also look forward to some alternatives. Our pear, raspberry and white chocolate cake is legendary while our Tunisian orange cake is another best seller. Sticky ginger cake, peanut butter cake, fruity crumble cake, tiffin, blueberry and white chocolate cake…the list is endless!

Remember, next time you’re in need of a coffee & cake fix, support your local independent coffee shops!
